DAO ARCHITECTURE
ENTER THE CHAINSCAPE

2020 PORTLAND WINTER LIGHTS FESTIVAL INSTALLATION

PORTLAND, OR

How can an art installation celebrate structure while encouraging interaction and movement?

This installation was built by a team consisting of members from DAO Arcitecture. Our installation was located in the gravel overflow lot for OMSI in SE Portland.

The concept of this piece was one that played with forms and transparancy. The structure is made form Unistrut and with Wire mesh to create the top. We hung Ball and Chain down to create a cube shape. There is also a woven top pieve that opens up when you are in the center. People can move through the chains to find themselves in the middle looking up at the night sky. The blue lighting along the edges makes for an everchanging lighting effect as people or just the wind moves the chains.

Together as an office we came up with many concepts eventually focusing on this concept. Toegtehr we planned otu the details of the connections using the unistrut manuel and worked with a lighting designer to coordinate the LED lighting strips used. We then constructed it on site, including digging 2 foot feep holes we filled with densly packed gravel to keep the structure to the gound and safe for the public to interact with.
